Weekdays by the local weekend (Sunday and Saturday), minus the public holidays most people have off.

What each day is

New Year's Day

The first day of the calendar year in the Gregorian calendar, 1 January. Cultures and religions that follow a lunisolar or lunar calendar celebrate their New Year at other points of the year. Japan celebrates New Year on 1 January, in accordance with the Gregorian calendar, instead of with the Chinese calendar that was in use until 1873.

At work: Fine to mention, and a natural moment to wish colleagues well.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday observed on the third Monday of January. King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement. It was signed into law in 1983 and first observed on 20 January 1986.

At work: Fine to mention. A federal holiday, so government offices are closed; private employers differ.

Washington's Birthday

A US federal holiday on the third Monday of February. It honours George Washington, the first President (born 22 February 1732), and is often celebrated as Presidents' Day, in honour of all presidents.

At work: Fine to mention. Banks, schools and government offices are closed, and many companies give the day off, but some do not.

American Samoa Flag Day

17 April is American Samoa's Flag Day. The territory came under US control through the Deed of Cession of Tutuila in 1900 and of Manu'a in 1904.

At work: Fine to mention. A day off.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday for mourning the US military personnel who died while serving in the US Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May. People visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers place American flags on the graves in national cemeteries. The flag is flown at half-staff until noon.

At work: Solemn, so "Happy" does not fit; "Have a good weekend" is safer. A Monday off for federal offices.

Juneteenth National Independence Day

Juneteenth, on 19 June, is a federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It refers to 19 June 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the Civil War.

At work: Fine to mention; it is a day of celebration and reflection on history. Private employers decide for themselves whether to give the day off, so check before assuming.

Independence Day

Independence Day, known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday that commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776, which declared the Thirteen Colonies no longer subject to the British monarch. It is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, picnics, concerts and family reunions.

At work: Fine and friendly to mention.

Manu'a Islands Cession Day

16 July remembers the Deed of Cession of Manu'a. In 1904 the last sovereign of Manu'a, the Tui Manu'a, signed the deed that placed the Manu'a islands under the United States.

At work: Fine to mention. A day off.

Labor Day

Labor Day is held on the first Monday of September in the United States and Canada. The date was suggested as sitting midway between the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. It is called the "unofficial end of summer" because it marks the end of the nominal summer season in the US.

At work: Fine to mention. It is a long weekend, and work tends to pick up afterwards.

White Sunday

White Sunday (Lotu Tamaiti, "Children's Service") falls on the second Sunday of October. Parents and communities celebrate childhood with special programmes during church services, including scriptural recitations, Bible-story reenactments and dances. Children receive gifts, often new clothes or school supplies, and are allowed privileges.

At work: Very welcome to mention. A family day: expect church services and some quiet offices.

Columbus Day

A federal holiday on the second Monday of October, marking Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas in 1492. American Samoa observes all US federal holidays. In many places the day is observed as Indigenous Peoples' Day instead.

At work: The holiday's meaning is debated, so it is best not to make a point of it. A day off for government offices.

Veterans Day

Veterans Day is a federal holiday observed on 11 November to honour military veterans of the US Armed Forces. It was originally known as Armistice Day and was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. It is distinct from Memorial Day: Veterans Day commemorates the service of all US veterans, while Memorial Day honours those who died in service.

At work: A federal holiday. Fine to mention.

Thanksgiving Day

A harvest festival held on the fourth Thursday of November. Families and friends gather for a big meal and give thanks for the year. These US territories observe all US federal holidays, including Thanksgiving.

At work: Very welcome to mention. Expect US colleagues to be hard to reach for several days.

Christmas Day

Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on 25 December. Eastern Christian Churches that follow the older Julian calendar celebrate it on 25 December of that calendar, which currently corresponds to 7 January. It is a public holiday in many countries, and many non-Christians celebrate it culturally too.

At work: Widely welcome to mention. Plan important meetings before the break. If you're unsure whether someone celebrates it, "Happy holidays" is a safe choice.
