Weekdays by the local weekend (Sunday and Saturday), minus the public holidays most people have off.

What each day is

Liberation Day

Marks 1 January 1959, the day the Cuban Revolution led by Fidel Castro won, which established the country's present government. It falls on New Year's Day.

At work: Fine to mention. A day off, the same day as New Year's Day.

Victory Day

2 January is Victory Day (Día de la Victoria), the day after Liberation Day on 1 January, which marks the victory in 1959 of the revolution led by Fidel Castro.

At work: Fine to mention. A day off.

Good Friday

A solemn Christian holy day commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus, observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum. It falls on the Friday immediately before Easter Sunday.

At work: Fine to mention the long weekend. It is a sombre day for those who observe it, so avoid "Happy Good Friday". Its date moves every year with Easter, so check the calendar when planning spring deadlines.

International Workers' Day

International Workers' Day, on 1 May, honours workers and the labour movement. The date was chosen to commemorate the 1886 general strike in the United States that culminated in the Haymarket affair, and the day was adopted in support of a "great international demonstration" for the eight-hour day.

At work: Fine to mention the day off. In some countries it has a political side, so keep it about the break.

Commemoration of the Assault of the Moncada garrison

The days before and after the anniversary of the assault on the Moncada Barracks on 26 July 1953 are also public holidays in Cuba.

At work: Fine to mention. A day off.

Day of the National Rebellion

26 July, whose official name means "National Rebellion Day", marks the morning of 26 July 1953, when some 160 men under the command of Fidel Castro attacked the Moncada Barracks. The revolutionary 26 July Movement was named after the date.

At work: Fine to mention. A day off.

Independence Day

10 October marks the day in 1868 when Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, "Father of the Homeland", freed his slaves and started the independence war against the Spanish colonial power, which led to the Cry of Yara.

At work: Fine to mention. A day off.

Christmas Day

Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on 25 December. Eastern Christian Churches that follow the older Julian calendar celebrate it on 25 December of that calendar, which currently corresponds to 7 January. It is a public holiday in many countries, and many non-Christians celebrate it culturally too.

At work: Widely welcome to mention. Plan important meetings before the break. If you're unsure whether someone celebrates it, "Happy holidays" is a safe choice.

New Year's Eve

The last day of the year, 31 December, is celebrated with dancing, food, drink and fireworks, and many Christians attend a watchnight service. Celebrations run past midnight into New Year's Day.

At work: Fine to mention. Whether it is a day off depends on the country; the card shows the official days off.
