What each day is

New Year's Day

The first day of the calendar year in the Gregorian calendar, 1 January. Cultures and religions that follow a lunisolar or lunar calendar celebrate their New Year at other points of the year. Japan celebrates New Year on 1 January, in accordance with the Gregorian calendar, instead of with the Chinese calendar that was in use until 1873.

At work: Fine to mention, and a natural moment to wish colleagues well.

Armed Forces Day

11 February honours the Armed Forces of Liberia.

At work: Fine to mention. A day off.

Decoration Day

National Decoration Day, on the second Wednesday in March, is a day to decorate the graves of ancestors.

At work: Welcome to mention with respect. A day off.

J. J. Roberts Memorial Birthday

15 March is the birthday of Joseph Jenkins Roberts, the first president of Liberia.

At work: Fine to mention. A day off.

Fasting and Prayer Day

Fast and Prayer Day, on the second Friday in April, was established by an act of the national legislature in 1883.

At work: Welcome to mention. A day off.

National Unification and Integration Day

14 May, also called Integration Day, aims to improve relations between descendants of American slaves and members of the aboriginal population. It was established in 1960.

At work: Welcome to mention. A day off.

Independence Day

Marks 26 July 1847, the Liberian Declaration of Independence, from the American Colonization Society.

At work: Very welcome to mention. A day off.

National Flag Day

24 August. The holiday was first observed at the 1847 convention, when the founding fathers approved the flag's design along with establishing the new republic. It was established as a national holiday in 1915.

At work: Very welcome to mention. A day off.

Thanksgiving Day

Kept on the first Thursday in November since 1883, when the legislature made it a national holiday. It is a day of prayer to give thanks for being born in a free country. Liberia was founded as a colony in 1821, by people freed from slavery and free people of colour from the United States. Unlike the American holiday, no food is tied to the day: some families have a feast or a cook-out, some go to religious services and others rest.

At work: Welcome to mention. A day off.

Tubman Administration Goodwill Day

29 November is the birthday of William V. S. Tubman, the longest-serving president of Liberia.

At work: Fine to mention. A day off.

Christmas Day

Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on 25 December. Eastern Christian Churches that follow the older Julian calendar celebrate it on 25 December of that calendar, which currently corresponds to 7 January. It is a public holiday in many countries, and many non-Christians celebrate it culturally too.

At work: Widely welcome to mention. Plan important meetings before the break. If you're unsure whether someone celebrates it, "Happy holidays" is a safe choice.
