What each day is

New Year's Day

The first day of the calendar year in the Gregorian calendar, 1 January. Cultures and religions that follow a lunisolar or lunar calendar celebrate their New Year at other points of the year. Japan celebrates New Year on 1 January, in accordance with the Gregorian calendar, instead of with the Chinese calendar that was in use until 1873.

At work: Fine to mention, and a natural moment to wish colleagues well.

Lunar New Year

Tsagaan Sar, the Mongolian Lunar New Year, is the first day of the year in the Mongolian lunisolar calendar. The festival, also called the White Moon festival, is celebrated on the first through third days of the first lunar month.

At work: Very welcome to mention. Expect a break of about three days and quiet offices.

International Women's Day

Celebrated on 8 March, it commemorates women's fight for equality and the women's rights movement, and gives focus to gender equality, reproductive rights and violence against women. It grew out of labour movements in Europe and North America in the early 20th century, and is a public holiday in the countries listed.

At work: Welcome to mention. In several countries it is a day off; the card shows the official days off.

The Buddha's Birthday

The Buddha's Birthday is held on the 15th day of the first summer month of the lunar year.

At work: Welcome to mention. A day off.

Children's Day

1 June is Children's Day (Khüükhdiin bayar), a public holiday in Mongolia.

At work: Welcome to mention. A day off.

National Festival and People's Revolution Anniversary

Naadam is a traditional midsummer festival in Mongolia involving Mongolian wrestling, horse racing and archery. The holiday in Mongolia is a six-day break that coincides with the Naadam Festival, on 10–15 July.

At work: Very welcome to mention. Expect a long break and quiet offices.

Genghis Khan's Birthday

Chinggis Khaan's Birthday is held on the first day of the first winter month of the lunar year. It was established in 2012 and expresses a symbolic birthday for Genghis Khan, as his exact date of birth is not known.

At work: Very welcome to mention. A day off.

Republic Day

26 November marks the establishment of the Mongolian People's Republic in 1924, and has been observed since then.

At work: Fine to mention. A day off.

National Freedom and Independence Day

29 December is Independence Day in Mongolia, a public holiday.

At work: Welcome to mention. A day off.
